There’s a Simpson’s house in real life

There is a house in Clark County Nevada that is the exact replica of the house in “The Simpsons.” Built in 1997, it was the grand prize for a contest run by Pepsi and Fox.

It cost $120,000. The winner could either to decide to occupy the house or take a $75,000 cash prize.

The house exactly mirrored that in the show, down to every color! The winner of the contest decided not to live in the house, and it was remodeled and sold in 2007.

In the Disney movie Hercules, the only character without a Greek name is Hercules.

Hercules, one of the most popular Disney movies of all time, was released in 1997. Roughly based on Greek legends, the story follows the young son of Zeus as he attempts to become a god like his father.

However, what is odd about the movie is that Hercules is the only character with a Roman name! Disney named all the main characters after their Greek counterparts from mythology, such as Zeus, Hades, and Pegasus, yet refrained from naming Hercules his Greek name, Herakles. Disney claimed the name was more recognizable among fans.

The animal in Firefox is not actually a fox!

It’s actually a red panda! Slightly larger than a domestic cat, the red panda is native to the Himalayas and western China. Many assume that the animal in the Firefox logo is a fox, yet Firefox is actually the nickname for the rare panda species. Eating mostly bamboo, it is currently classified as “vulnerable” by IUCN because of its dwindling population.

    

The world’s smallest guitar is the size of a red blood cell!

Developed by Cornell University researchers, this guitar is only ten micrometers long! How big is that? It would take one million micrometers to make one meter! The guitar has six strings, and each string is only about one hundred atoms thick.

Made out of crystalline silicon it demonstrates new technology for a new generation of electromechanical devices. The guitar can actually be played, but it’s so small the sounds produced would be inaudible to the human ear.

The Philippines has an island situated in a lake within an island within a lake within an island.

Vulcan Point is a place in the Philippines that is in Main Crater Lake, which is within Volcano Island, which is within Lake Taal, which is within the island of Luzon. It's all part of the complex volcanic system of the Taal Volcano.

The volcano was formed due to massive prehistoric eruptions, and is still active today. It's a popular tourist destination not just due to the uniqueness of the Inception-esque island formation, but also because it offers pretty nice views of the island in general.

Scientists have discovered that there is a tiny 80 millisecond lag between the external reality and your brain processing the information. This time is slightly longer than a blink of an eye. Scientists compare this to the way live television is not really live but rather on a shot delay so there can be time to edit anything inappropriate (like wardrobe malfunctions)

The first webcam was created to watch a coffee pot!

In 1991, a camera was installed to capture pictures of the coffee pot in the Trojan Room of the old computer lab at the University of Cambridge! The idea behind it was to allow people to see if there was still coffee without having to go from their respective departments/rooms to the pot!

The image was 128x128 feed of the famed coffee pot on the user’s desktop in grayscale. Years later, the ‘Trojan Room coffee pot’ was auctioned off on eBay for £3350 ($5268.55)!

Suicide in the Eiffel Tower is apparently quite common. France has one of the highest suicide rates at 17.5 suicides per 1000 people! Killing yourself with the 1,063 foot “Iron Lady” is the third most popular French suicide method behind poisoning and hanging.

A few times, people have attempted to kill themselves but failed to do so. It's reported that one man was blown onto a rafter by the wind and he was spared. The most curious case is one of a woman who jumped, landed on the roof of a car and later married the man who owned it!

In an effort to reduce the number of suicides off of the Tower, six foot tall barriers were built around the tower. It has worked very well as the suicide rates have gone down exponentially. However, 4-5 cases of suicides a year in the famous city still happen.

The man who discovered Pluto is currently on his way there!

More specifically, his ashes are flying towards the dwarf (former) planet. Clyde Tombaugh’s ashes are traveling within the New Horizons spacecraft on a goal to pass Pluto by 2015!

The container Tombaugh’s ashes are in inscribes what would have been on the man’s tombstone including his discovery of Pluto and his family. So next time you look up at the sky, squint hard and see if you can find New Horizons and the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh!

Cherries are packed full of substances that help fight inflammation and cancer. Two important compounds found in cherries, quercetin and ellagic acid, have been found to inhibit tumor growth and even cause the cancer cells to commit suicide without hurting healthy cells.

Disney's The Lion King is a total ripoff of "Kimba the White Lion", a Japanese cartoon

"Kimba the White Lion" was a Japanese manga (comic book) from the 1950s that became a cartoon show (anime) in the 1960s. In addition to having a similarly-named protagonist ("Kimba" as opposed to "Simba") the "Kimba" cartoon and "The Lion King" feature extremely similar characters: a wise monkey character, hyenas as comic-relief villains, a dead father who appears to his son in the clouds, and an older relative (an aunt in "Kimba" and an uncle in "Lion King") who serves as the main antagonist.

Ironically, Osamu Tezuka,the creator of "Kimba" and the popular series "Astroboy", drew from Walt Disney's early work as inspiration for his own artistic style, and he even received permission from Walt Disney to make a manga adaptation of Disney's "Bambi".

An adult electric eel can generate a charge capable of knocking a horse off its feet

This charge can be at least as powerful as 600 volts, which is about five times the capacity of a typical American wall socket! This power is generated by a group of around 6,000 specialized cells called electrocytes, which are able to store electricity like a battery. Despite their name and appearance, electric eels are not actually "eels" - they are more properly classified as a fish similar to carp or catfish! Human deaths from these creatures is actually quite infrequent, though multiple jolts can cause heart failure. The main risk when encountering this animal is drowning after being stunned by an electric shock.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse were married in real life!

Wayne Allwine took over the voice acting for Mickey Mouse in 1977. He was only the third person to ever voice Mickey (Walt Disney himself was the first one). He voiced Mickey until he died in 2009, doing it for 32 years! Actress Russi Taylor began performing for Minnie Mouse in 1986 and still does so to this day, making her the longest lasting performer for Minnie Mouse.

The two got married in 1991 and remained together until Wayne died in 2009! Details of their personal life aren't easily available, but it's not hard to imagine the two falling in love after long recording sessions while playing their rodent characters!

Grenades are named after pomegranates

The name of the explosive armament actually comes from the french word for the fruit, grenade. This came from the old french word pomegrenate or pomme-grenade. The name for the grenade reflects the similarity in shape between it and the pomegranate. Pomegranates also can explode when overripe in order to spread its seeds over a wide perimeter.
